(Renewables Now) – The UK government on Tuesday presented its Jet Zero strategy, targeting net zero emissions for domestic aviation and zero emissions for all airports in England by 2040.
The strategy, which was launched at Farnborough International Airshow and builds on the UK’s Net Zero plan, includes a mandate that will require at least 10% of jet fuel to be sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) by 2030.
The government is also committing to have at least five commercial-scale SAF plants under construction in the UK by 2025.
SAF production projects in the UK will be able to compete for support from a newly launched GBP-165-million (USD 198m/EUR 193m) Advanced Fuels Fund.
The government says its Jet Zero strategy is aimed at future-proofing the aviation sector and ensuring “guilt-free” air travel.
It further includes a plan for the industry to keep carbon emissions below pre-pandemic levels of 2019 through measures such as system efficiencies and new technologies.
“We want 2019 to be remembered as the peak year for aviation emissions. From now on, it should all be downhill for carbon emissions – and steadily uphill for green flights,” said Transport Secretary Grant Shapps.
